Welcome

Directions:

For the next several days, you will be performing several exercises to review ions, ionic bonding, and nomenclature. (Chapters 7.1, 7.2, 9.1, 9.2)

The first assignments will be tutorials and a few online quizzes. You will need to follow the directions for registering to logon to the ChemThink website. Because your scores and number of attempts will be seen by me, it is important that you register using your full name and correct period.

The second assignment online will be a virtual lab. This virtual lab is from the ChemThink Website. It will help you understand the material and concepts from the actual lab that we will perform in class on Thursday.

Any assignments that you do not finish, you need to complete at home or in the library.

Ready to start? Click on the Procedure link on the left under Main Menu or scroll down.

Procedure

Registration

  1. Take out the Periodic Table I gave you or the one in your timetracker.
  2. Go to the ChemThink site at www.chemthink.com
  3. On the right hand side of the screen, click on the words 'Not Registered?'
  4. Enter the code 1229-1320-5012 then click on the Register button.
  5. Enter your first name, last name, a username, and a password. You must also choose the period for your class. Please write down this username/password!

Tutorials and Quizzes

  1. On the ChemThink website, I have assigned you several tutorials and quizzes that are listed on the main page. The quizzes are designed to correlate with the tutorials so if you are having difficulties, please go through the tutorials again, slower. You do not need to write anything down but please do these activities IN ORDER. The first activity should be a review of ions. Some tips:
    1. Some questions have multiple answers, so please check more than one response.
    2. If your answer is a positive one charge, please write the sign and the number (EX: 1+) or you will get the problem wrong.
    3. Some of the questions require you to view the imag e in 3D - use the mouse to "spin" the image.
  2. After completing all the tutorials and quizzes assigned, please complete the virtual lab. From the home menu on the ChemThink website, look on the right side of the screen. Click Labs. Then click Chemical Reactions and then Precipitate Lab. You will be completing the Precipitate Lab. While completing the online lab, answer the following questions on a piece of notebook paper - this will be your prelab.
    1. If you have a solution bottle marked AgNO3 (aq), what is really in the bottle?
    2. Why do some solutions form precipitates (solids) when they are mixed?
    3. What does a complete ionic equation show?
    4. What does a net ionic equation show?
    5. What does a molecular equation show?
    6. Why do some solutions do nothing (don't form pieces of solid) when they are mixed?
